A handful of designs would come from this decision, but none were as striking as the appropriately named “Western”. Designated the Class 52, the “Western” proved the potential of hydraulic power, pulling express services through Western England with ease, and capable of 90mph operation thanks to its double-engine setup. Following a reign throughout the 1960s and 70s, commonality had spoken, and rival diesel-electric technology became the dominant choice for British motive power. Thankfully, a handful of Westerns dodged the cutters torch, and in years since, have taken charge working railtours and reminiscing in yesteryear on heritage railways. In Train Sim World 4, the Class 52 makes a loud and proud appearance on the West Somerset Railway’s historical diesel gala, take to the rails and give the passengers a sense of 1960s finesse!
